Director Tyler McKenzie Evans has won the Fall 2023 competition of Canada Council for the Arts Explore & Create program, which received more than 6,750 eligible applications—a record high of applications in a single competition. This award officially closes financing on production which is also supported by Ontario Arts Council and Kodak. SEA STAR is executive produced by Common Good and produced by Claire Desmarais and fellow Canadian Film Centre alum Malachi Ellis, who produced Tyler’s latest short film DIASPORA (tiff ‘22). It also affords Tyler the opportunity to expand his artistic practice and explore new cinematic horizons by shooting on 16mm film for the first time.

SEA STAR, a dramatic short about a 60 year-old Black man’s first swimming lesson, takes a nuanced approach to raising awareness about alarming racial disparities in the context of swimming.

Pre-production is already underway. The team is very excited to announce Anna Catley as Editor and share additional key attachments in the coming months.
